Shimba Hills Rain Forest Lodge is set deep in the heart of an ancient tropical rain forest of Shimba Hills National Park and is cleverly constructed in indigenous timber blending perfectly with beautiful forest vegetation of Shimba Hills Park.
Shimba Hills National Reserve is a mere 45 minutes from the Indian Ocean coastal town of Mombasa (30 minutes from the South coast resorts of Diani) and covers 192 sq. km of rolling hills and rainforest which have been reserved for Kenya's last breeding herds of the Sable Antelope.
Elephant, Buffalo, Civet, Serval and Genet Cat share this scenic home, and can be sighted most evenings at Shimba's floodlit waterhole.
Shimba Hills Rain Forest Lodge is an award-winning tree lodge that was built in 1986. It is located in Shimba National Reserve, Kenya's last remaining habitat of the Rare Sable Antelope. Shimba Hills Lodge is 50 Kilometers south west of Mombasa.
Facilities
Shimba Hills Rain Forest Lodge rooms are comfortable and uniquely furnished some with the gnarled trunk of a tree providing a natural centerpiece, overlook the waterhole. The lodge can accommodate 65 people. Double and triple rooms have access to toilet and shower facilities; suites have their own bathrooms.
The open fronted dining room allows unrestricted game and bird viewing at all times, and an elevated walkway extending well into the forest gives peace seeking visitors a few rare moments alone with nature.
Shimba Hills is one of the few places in all of Kenya's National Reserves from which guests can experience the wilderness on foot. Accompanied by an armed guide, there are walks to Marere Dam, Cycad forest and a shower at Sheldrick's Falls.
In the evening, you can hear sounds rasp of Cicadas, the scream of Bush Babies, and the croak of frogs making the whole experience unique. Early morning and evening Kenya safari game drives in safari cruisers are available, and the Shimba sundowner excursion with views well into neighboring Tanzania is a must.
Treetops and Shimba are located very close to the wild animals. For this reason, children under the age of 5 are not allowed at either of these lodges, both for their safety and to maintain the quiet of the environment.
