MOUNT KENYA TECHNICAL ROCK CLIMBING NORTH FACE STANDARD ROUTE TO BATIAN 5199M IN SIRIMON – OUT CHOGORIA
Feel free to talk to our experienced consultants for your preferred trekking routing. This climbing route up Batian is the 20-pitch North Face Standard Route (IV+ East African grade) or (V 5.8+).
Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses
Departs: Any day
Seasons: June – September & Early October
Driving time: 3hrs
Distance: Approximately 220kms
Depart Nairobi and drive through central Kenya to the lower slopes of Mt Kenya arriving Park gate (alt.2700m) in time for lunch. After enjoying our picnic lunch, start an acclimatization hike in the tropical forests of Mt. Kenya to arrive at the Old Moses camp (alt.3200m) in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Hut (9km about 3-4hrs)
Day 2: Old Moses – Shiptons
After an early breakfast, start the hike up the moorland vegetation, enjoying the amazing scenery of the Sirimon and Mackinders valleys. Picnic lunches will be served on the way arriving at the Shiptons camp (alt.4200m) in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at the camp - 14kms - 6-7Hrs
Day 3 & 4: Shiptons – Batian Base for acclimatization / Point John – Shiptons
These two days are preserved for acclimatizing before attempting the daring Batian peak standing tall at an altitude of 5119m. Walk to the base of the climb (Batian) and back to Shiptons Camp for lunch and dinner (3-4 hrs)
Day 5: Shiptons – Summit Lenana – Shiptons
Hiking time: 4hrs to Point Lenana Peak, 2hrs to Shipton
Distance: Approximately 5kms ascent, 19kms descent
Habitat: Stone scree, ice-capped summit and Moorland
Start the attempt at 03h00 of the screech scree to the summit - point Lenana (alt.4985m) which is the highlight of our trip! After taking photos with the sunrise, descend slowly to the Shiptons where we will have breakfast, a short rest and then start the trek down to Old Moses hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 6 & 7: Shiptons – Batian – Shiptons
Early breakfast at 0400hrs start hiking to the base and start climbing at 0600hrs accompanied by our technical guide and back to Shiptons the same day if the weather is favorable. NB: Summiting will be determined by the prevailing weather condition at the time of climbing i.e. snow / wind.
Day 8: Shiptons – Chogoria Bandas
After breakfast, descend leisurely to Chogoria park gate (3020m) for overnight with lunch enroute. This area has spectacular views down into the Gorges valley with Lake Michaelson and Vivienne falls and across on the other side you can see Ithanguni peak, Rotundu peaks and the Giant flat top Kilingo hill table.
Day 9: Meru Bandas Chogoria – Nairobi
After breakfast and feeling like achievers and we surely are, descend down from Mt. Kenya Meru bandas to Chogoria town for 10km on the forest. Once done with the 10km walk (3-5hrs), pick up with 4x4 vehicle to Chogoria town for our onward destination.
Any extra day will cost from KES 5,000 & USD 150 per person for citizen / resident and non resident respectively
