AHV-K 034: 7 Nights 8 Days Samburu - Marsabit - Chalbi Desert - Jade Sea - Maralal 2020

Print PDF
This rugged 1,800 km expedition is designed for ardent adventure lovers. We travel into the heart of the northern Kenya wilds. We traverse through some of the Africa's most challenging roads, see beautiful mountain forests surrounded on all sides by hot dusty deserts, eventually arriving at the desert ocean – the Jade Sea (Lake Turkana). On our way, we will encounter a variety of people and tribes, whose lives are little touched by modern lifestyle. We may also get to cross the shimmering seemingly endless sands of the Chalbi Desert - if dry. During the rains it becomes an enormous shallow lake. We end up at Lake Turkana located in a region that is one of the great sources of evidence of the emergence of modern man. The lake has an impressive variety of birdlife and the big game fishing is spectacular.

Highlights: Game and Bird Watching, Camping, Lake Turkana, Culture, Ethnic, Scenery, Wildlife, Photography and Nyahururu falls {formerly Thompson falls}.

Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu (Packed Lunch, Dinner)

We depart Nairobi and proceed to Samburu National Reserve which lies on the vast semi desert lands of Northern Kenya with packed lunch enroute. ETA at Samburu is 1600hrs. We set camp before dusk. Dinner, overnight and bonfire at Samburu Ewaso Nyiro Camp

Day 2: Samburu (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

We spend a full day in the Reserve with early morning and late evening game drives. Meals will be provided at the camp with an option of picnic lunch. The game drives will introduce us to the animals which are peculiar to this area; the Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy's Zebra and the Somali Ostrich. Lions are also frequently seen on the riverbanks and Cheetah can be found on the open plains. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 3: Samburu – Marsabit (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

After breakfast, we exit Samburu as we head further north along the Trans African highway to Marsabit. After setting up camp, we will visit the lodge inside Marsabit National Park. The lodge is situated on the edge of a water-filled crater and you have a good chance of seeing Elephants, Buffalo, and Kudu. Mt. Marsabit on which the park is located, rises above the desert floor to 1700 meters. It has created its own microclimate with a mist that usually hugs its slopes. Though the lower slopes are dry, higher levels are heavily forested and you find several crater lakes, swamps and unique wildlife. This park has a record of 300 bird species. Dinner and Overnight at the camp

Day 4: Marsabit – Kalacha (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

After breakfast, we exit Marsabit National Park with a brief visit to Marsabit town and another volcanic crater before making our way back into the desert and lava flows. We camp for the night at Kalacha, a small settlement on the edge of Chalbi desert. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 5: Kalacha – Lake Turkana (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

After an early breakfast, we depart for the adventure of crossing the scenic and hot Chalbi desert. The glistening endless sands stretch for 300 km up to Lake Turkana. The desert cannot be crossed if wet, but there are alternative routes around the north and south. We arrive soon after lunch at a semi permanent beach village outside Loiyangalani on the shores of Lake Turkana. After a long and scotchy journey through the desert, we relax as we enjoy the cool breeze blowing from the lake, protected from the scorching sun and heat that is characteristic of the harsh climate of this remote area. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 6: Lake Turkana (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

We spend a full day relaxing and sun bathing at the shores of Lake Turkana, with an optional short boat excursion to the surrounding areas. The visit will enrich our cultural knowledge of the Turkana community. Our visit will be climaxed by a LIVE Turkana Manyatta experience where we will enjoy traditional dances by the colorful Turkana people under the magnificent sky (these activities attract a minimal extra cost). L. Turkana, formerly L. Rudolf is now named after one of the tribes who live on its shores and it is in this area that Richard Leakey uncovered the three million year old fossils of 'Homo Erectus.' This pre historic site is now known as the "Cradle of Mankind". The Lake is also known as the "Jade Sea" because of its remarkable blue – green color. This is a result of algae particles, which shift with changes of the wind and light, so that the water surface shifts from blue to grey to fabulous jade. The lake is home to the largest population of Nile crocodiles in the world. Dramatic is the verdant canyon of South Horr. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 7: Lake Turkana - Maralal (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

After breakfast, we exit Jade Sea as we journey via South Horr and Baragoi to reach Maralal. As we approach Maralal, we will come across one of the most breath taking scenes in Kenya – the Losiolo escarpment, an endless stretch as land drops down to the Suguta valley. Maralal is also home of the Maralal International Camel Derby that happens once a year between July and October and attracts riders and spectators from the four corners of the world. Dinner and overnight at the camp

Day 8: Maralal - Nairobi (Breakfast, Lunch)

After breakfast, we resume our southbound drive via Laikipia plains and Nyahururu (Thompson's Falls). After lunch, we drive further towards Nairobi arriving late in the afternoon.
