AHV-K 031: 2 Nights 3 Days Walking Safari – Tour through Aberdare Ranges 2019 -2020

Print PDF
Aberdare National Park offers a raft of activities paralleled by few other wildlife parks. These include:
  • Trekking and hiking: Some of Kenya's finest trekking and hiking trails crisscross the Aberdare's lower slopes and moorland.
  • Mountain biking: Given its high altitudes, Aberdare ranges Kenya is a great place to hone your mountain biking skills while taking in the awesome sights of Kenya wildlife as well as the breathtaking african landscapes.
  • Sightseeing and casccading waterfalls: If you are yearning for a generous doze of green, the Aberdare ranges Kenya is right up your alley as it is heavily forested.

Aberdare Mountain Ranges Kenya cover a 160 km (100 mile) long mountain range located north of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya and just south of the Equator. The entire Aberdare mountain range above 3,050 (10,000ft) is enclosed in the park.

Buffaloes proliferate and dominate the grasslands. African Elephants, Bushbucks, Warthogs, Waterbucks and Duikers can also be sighted without too much effort. However, Aberdare National Park is particularly well-endowed with Leopards, Black Rhinos, Bongos and Giant forest Hogs. The park is definitely one of the best places to see leopards in Kenya - probably second only to Samburu National Reserve.

Day 1: Nairobi - Aberdare Ranges

We depart Nairobi by 0700hrs in the morning driving through the breath taking views of the Central Highlands into the forested eastern slopes of the Aberdare ranges. We indulge in a 7km walk to The famous Karuru Falls before returning back to Fishing Lodge Bandas / Reedbuck campsite (3090m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Aberdare Ranges - Ol Doinyo Le Satima Peak (Walking & Trekking)

We aim to start the trek at 0700hrs to finish by 1500hrs. At 4,001 meters (13,120 feet), Oldoinyo le Satima is the mountain range's highest peak followed by the Kinangop and Kipipiri peaks. While these peaks are pale when compared to Batian, Mount Kenya's highest peak which stands 5,199m (17,057 ft) tall, they still make this climb worthy. Trekking along these trails is always cool with plenty of clear trout filled mountain streams. There is always likelihood of encountering large game that may prove precarious whilst walking through the African bush but our trained and armed game rangers know the area and habits of the game and should help us avoid such confrontations as much as possible. The Aberdares foorest is noted as a Rhino sanctuary but keep an eye out for the elusive rare Bongo, which is best spotted in the upper bamboo zone and hypericum scrub. Trekking is along bleak moorlands, tropical alpine vegetation such as Lobelia and giant Goundsel.

After a fulfilling day's trek full of greenery scenery, we will exit the park with game drive enroute and site seeing along the moorlands of the Aberdare forest. We will also get to visit the famous Chania falls, Queen's cave the former hideout of the Mau Mau freedom fighters. Just before dusk, we will head to the Treetops Lodge for a sumptuous dinner and overnight stay. Nocturnal game viewing is the highlight of the Treetop lodge where guests are at liberty to request to be notified in the event that a rare animal turns up at the waterhole even during the night.

Treetops Lodge has a basement glass house (check this video out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK3cVYnXlJs) from where you get a first hand glimpse of wildlife which come to quench their thirst at the man made waterhole. The same lodge has an upper viewing deck from where you view same wildlife at whatever time. It is also the famous lodge from which Queen Elizabeth ascended to her throne as a princess while on her honeymoon.
