Holiday Summary:
This safari ventures into the Northern part of Kenya; Samburu Game Reserve where the landscape is a mix of Savanna and arid semi-desert like environment with sights of the peculiar doum palms following the Ewaso Nyiro river and taut thorn trees giving an unusual look to the region. Some animal species are only found in the North such as the Grevy Zebras and long necked Gerenuk whilst the Samburu people abound in their vibrant dress. We will also sample the world famous Bird Sanctuaries of the Great Rift Valley Lakes Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru. Lake Baringo is Kenya's bird watching centre with more than 450 species sighted here as well as Hippos, Crocodiles and Monitor lizards whilst Lake Bogoria offers hot springs and various bird species as the main attraction. Lake Nakuru national park is home to the endangered Black and White Rhinos, Lions, Buffalos, Waterbucks, various Antelopes, bird species, Flamingoes and the elusive Leopards.
Day 1: Nairobi – Samburu National Game Reserve
Depart Nairobi in the morning heading north via the shoulder of Africa's second largest mountain, Mt Kenya to the Samburu Game Reserve. Accommodation in our semi-permanent campsite is beautifully set under a canopy of trees or we may pitch tents by the edge of Uaso Nyiro (meaning Brown in Samburu) River. Cold showers are available which are amazingly refreshing in the hot dusty climate. (Picnic lunch & Dinner)
Day 2: Samburu
We spend the day game viewing in the park appreciating the diverse landscape and variety of animal species. You may have the option of enjoying a swim or cold drink at a nearby lodge. Alternatively, visit a vibrant Samburu village (optional). Animals to look out for include the uncommon Grevy's zebra, Gerenuk antelope standing on hind legs to feed, Lions, Somali ostriches with distinct blue legs and the shy Oryx. The horn billed stork is a common sighting as well as various other birds. Elephants and Crocodiles are also sighted along the river bed. (Breakfast, Picnic lunch & Dinner)
Day 3: Samburu – Lake Baringo
Depart early in the morning (with lunch enroute) towards Lake Baringo. We arrive at this fresh water lake in the late afternoon and depending on the conditions of the lake, we enjoy an evening boat ride in search of Hippos, Crocodiles and numerous birds. A bird watcher's haven but beware this is malaria infested area so it is best to come prepared with preventive drugs and mosquito repellent. We spend the night at Roberts campsite. Day 4: Lake Baringo – Lake Bogoria – Lake Nakuru National Park
A 30km drive south to the spectacular Lake Bogoria with hot springs and geysers being the main attractions. It has a nomad population of up to two million flamingos and numerous bird species. Lunch will be served then proceed for an afternoon game drive at the Lake Nakuru National Park which is a small but equally rewarding park which is home to the black and white Rhinos, Lions, Buffalos, Waterbucks, Flamingos, Baboons, Antelopes, the elusive Leopard and numerous bird species. We set up camp (cold night). (Breakfast, Picnic lunch & Dinner)
Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Nairobi
After a well deserved adventure, break camp then drive back to Nairobi arriving late in the afternoon. (Breakfast & Picnic lunch)
